In 1814, Washington, D.C. was still just a meager village (only 24 years old as the new nation’s federal capital). It was nearly wiped out of existence by a British invasion during the War of 1812.  Nearly every federal building was burned including the White House and the Capitol Building. Numerous opportunities were missed to avoid the calamity, but something amazing happened that spared D.C.
